Losing patience, Carrera, Yankees Fan and the Asian American had just entered the corridor to see what was keeping Lavesque and found him trying to get back to his feet, blood covering his face and the floor around him.

‘What the hell?’ Yankees Fan said, as they looked around. ‘Where’s the gun?’

‘My face. He hit me when-’

‘Where is it?’ Carrera shouted, looking all around them for the evidence bag.

Drawing their handguns, they ran towards the open fire door and reached it in time to catch a glimpse of a man in white t shirt and jeans sprinting to the end of the street, the evidence bag in his hand.

‘Oh shit, it’s him!’ Yankees Fan said, recognising the man from the Highline.

He raised his own weapon to shoot but was too late, as the figure cut around the corner.

‘Who the hell is that?’ Carrera asked as they took off after him.

‘The asshole from the first money drop!’ Yankees Fan told him. ‘The one who was tailing me!’

The three men chased after him, but when they rounded the corner, all they saw were a few pedestrians and a Mexican woman closing a Chipotle restaurant.

The cop had disappeared.

And he’d taken the Beretta they’d come down here to retrieve.
